Solo Travel: Discover the Freedom of Traveling Your Way

Solo travel is becoming more common for people of all ages.

I often say that traveling with friends and loved ones makes a great vacation even better. But sometimes, traveling solo can be just as rewarding—and in ways you might not expect.

I regularly hear from people who dream of traveling but hesitate because they don’t have anyone to go with them. Perhaps they’re single, recently divorced, or widowed. Maybe their partner simply isn’t interested in traveling, or has a fear of flying that makes certain destinations difficult to reach together. Whatever the reason, too many people put their travel dreams on hold while waiting for someone else to join them.

My advice? Don’t let the absence of a travel companion keep you from seeing the world. Traveling alone doesn’t have to mean traveling lonely. In fact, it can be an opportunity to discover new places, meet fascinating people, and enjoy a level of freedom that’s difficult to find in everyday life.

My Unexpected Lessons in Solo Travel

One of my most memorable solo travel experiences was a 17-night Mediterranean cruise aboard Seabourn. I was hosting a group, so technically, I wasn't traveling entirely alone. However, I didn't personally know anyone in the group when the journey began, and I expected to spend quite a bit of time on my own. I wondered whether I might get bored or simply retreat to my suite and catch up on work during my downtime. Instead, I discovered just how enjoyable solo travel could be.

Several other guests were traveling alone, and Seabourn did an exceptional job of creating opportunities for solo travelers to connect. There were gatherings for guests traveling independently, invitations to dine together, and opportunities to share meals with crew members and guest lecturers. Rather than feeling like I was on my own, I found myself surrounded by interesting people and enjoying conversations I might never otherwise have had.

And what conversations they were! During that voyage, I met a restaurateur, a retired lawyer who had worked for the Australian Parliament, an airline CEO, a former Middle East war correspondent, two authors, a former British Home Secretary, and an Egyptologist. These weren't simply people I happened to sit beside at dinner. They became fellow adventurers, dinner companions, and, in some cases, lasting acquaintances. I still exchange occasional messages with several of them today.

I celebrated a birthday with one new friend, rode camels with a couple of others, and cycled around a Greek island with a small group. The experience was a wonderful reminder that some of the best parts of travel are the unexpected connections we make along the way.

Interestingly, had I been traveling with my wife, I probably wouldn't have met many of those people. She's more introverted than I am, and we would likely have enjoyed most meals together at a table for two. Traveling independently gave me the freedom to be more spontaneous, strike up conversations, and say yes to experiences I might otherwise have missed.

I returned home with wonderful memories, new friendships, and a fresh appreciation for the possibilities of traveling solo.

The Freedom to Travel on Your Own Terms

You don't have to be single to enjoy solo travel. Even if you have a wonderful travel companion, I believe everyone should consider taking a trip on their own at least once.

Think about how much of our daily lives revolves around coordinating with other people. We juggle work, family responsibilities, social commitments, and community activities. Even a vacation with someone we love involves compromises: Where should we eat? What should we see? How much activity is too much? When should we take a break?

Traveling solo removes many of those negotiations. You can linger over breakfast, spend an afternoon exploring a museum, take a leisurely walk along the waterfront, or change your plans on a whim. If you want to spend the day sightseeing, you can. If you'd rather settle into a café with a good book and watch the world go by, that's perfectly fine, too.

There's no need to worry about whether someone else is enjoying the day or feel obligated to participate in an activity that doesn't interest you. You can be as social or as independent as you like.

For many people, that freedom is wonderfully liberating. Solo travel offers time to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with yourself while discovering new places and experiences. You return home with more than photographs and souvenirs; you may also return with a renewed sense of confidence and independence. And for those who enjoy meeting people, traveling alone can make it easier to connect with fellow travelers and locals. Without the familiar comfort of a companion beside you, you're often more inclined to strike up a conversation or accept an invitation to join others.

You might discover that you're far more comfortable on your own than you imagined.

Is Solo Travel Safe? Absolutely—with Thoughtful Planning.

Safety is one of the most common concerns I hear from people considering a solo vacation, and it's a legitimate consideration. Traveling independently requires some additional thought, particularly when visiting unfamiliar destinations. But traveling solo doesn't mean you have to navigate every detail alone or take unnecessary risks. With thoughtful planning and the right arrangements, you can enjoy the independence of solo travel while having support available when you need it.

Here are a few ways to make your trip more comfortable and secure:

  • Choose accommodations carefully. Location matters. We look for well-situated hotels with good reputations, convenient access to transportation, and easy access to the places you want to visit.

  • Arrange transportation in advance when appropriate. Prearranged airport transfers and reputable drivers can make arrival in an unfamiliar destination much less stressful, particularly after a long flight.

  • Consider an organized cruise or guided tour. Having an established itinerary, experienced staff, and planned excursions takes much of the guesswork out of traveling somewhere new.

  • Stay connected. Share your itinerary with someone at home, keep important contact information accessible, and have a reliable way to communicate while traveling.

  • Trust your instincts. Be aware of your surroundings, take sensible precautions with your belongings, and don't feel obligated to participate in an activity or situation that makes you uncomfortable.

The key is finding the right balance between independence and support. You don't need to sacrifice the freedom of traveling alone to enjoy the reassurance that comes with a well-planned vacation.

A Cruise or Guided Tour Can Be the Perfect Introduction

If the idea of traveling solo sounds appealing but also a little intimidating, an organized vacation is an excellent place to start. A cruise, for example, allows you to unpack once while visiting multiple destinations. You have a comfortable home base, restaurants and activities close at hand, and a professional crew available to assist you. Shore excursions offer opportunities to explore with other guests, while time onboard lets you enjoy your own company whenever you wish.

Luxury cruise lines can be particularly appealing to solo travelers because of their emphasis on personalized service, enriching experiences, and opportunities to connect with fellow guests. Some offer dedicated solo gatherings, shared dining opportunities, or special accommodations and pricing for travelers booking on their own.

Guided tours are another excellent option. You benefit from knowledgeable guides, planned transportation, and a thoughtfully organized itinerary without having to research every destination or coordinate every detail yourself. You can enjoy the camaraderie of a group while still having time to explore independently.

Both options can provide a reassuring introduction to solo travel. You have a built-in community when you want company, professional assistance when you need it, and the freedom to enjoy your vacation at your own pace. And if you discover that solo travel is your preferred way to see the world? There's no reason it can't become a regular part of your travel plans.

For solo travelers, knowing that someone is available can provide welcome peace of mind. And the opportunity to share experiences with other travelers can turn a vacation into something even more memorable.

Women-Only Group Vacations: From time to time, we offer vacations designed for women who want to explore the world together. While some participants travel with friends, these departures can be an especially appealing option for women whose partners aren't interested in traveling or who would simply enjoy meeting like-minded women. You can experience a new destination, share memorable moments, and enjoy the camaraderie of a group without needing to organize a trip with your own circle of friends.

Opportunities to Avoid Solo Supplements: One of the frustrations of solo travel is the additional cost that can come with booking independently. Many cruises, tours, and resorts price their accommodations based on two people sharing a room or cabin. When one person travels alone, the supplier may charge a single supplement to account for the difference in revenue. Depending on the vacation, this additional cost can make solo travel considerably more expensive.

Fortunately, some travel companies periodically offer reduced or waived solo supplements on select departures, accommodations, and itineraries. These promotions can make an otherwise costly trip much more attractive. Our Travel Advisors can help you identify opportunities when they become available and determine which offers make sense for your travel plans.

Join Our Solo Travelers' Mailing List: If you're interested in traveling solo, we invite you to join the Lay Travel Group Solo Travelers' Mailing List. We'll share information about waived or reduced solo supplements, special offers, and other opportunities that may be particularly appealing to independent travelers. It's an easy way to discover possibilities you might not find on your own and begin thinking about where your next adventure could take you.

Traveling with someone you love can be wonderful. You don't have to be fearless to travel solo. You don't have to be an extrovert, either. And you certainly don't have to give up companionship or peace of mind to enjoy the experience. You simply need the right vacation and a plan that makes you feel comfortable.

We'll help you find an option that fits your interests and gives you the confidence to take that first step. Don't put your travel dreams on hold because you don't have someone to go with you.
