That was the idea behind our recent European Celebration of Beer river cruise with AmaWaterways, hosted by Lay Travel Group in partnership with Six Bridges Brewing. Over 14 days, 22 guests explored seven countries, discovered regional brewing traditions alongside knowledgeable experts, savored gourmet cuisine, and enjoyed the effortless pleasures of river cruising. We began with two days in Amsterdam and concluded with three nights in beautiful Como, Italy, creating a journey that extended well beyond the river itself.

For this journey, I partnered with Six Bridges Brewing, bringing its customers and fans together for an experience they couldn't find in an ordinary brewery visit or conventional group tour. Six Bridges co-owner Charles Gridley joined us as our group's personal Beer Expert, sharing his perspective as a brewer throughout our European adventure.
AmaWaterways complemented that experience with its own dedicated Beer Expert, who led onboard tastings, educational presentations, and beer-focused excursions ashore. Our journey began with two days in Amsterdam, allowing guests to explore the city before embarking on the river cruise. We started with a visit to Brouwerij ’t IJ, one of Amsterdam's best-known craft breweries, where local beer and food introduced us to the distinctive flavors of the Netherlands.
Over the next 14 days, we explored seven countries, combining European sightseeing and cultural discoveries with gourmet dining, regional beer tastings, expert-led experiences, and the pleasures of life aboard an AmaWaterways river cruise.
Our itinerary included visits to local breweries, a tasting in a Löwenbräu beer garden in Germany, and a tour of Switzerland's largest brewery, complete with time in its impressive tasting room. With dozens of taps offering a variety of brews, it was a particularly memorable opportunity to sample beers that many guests had never encountered before.
Each destination offered a new perspective on the relationship between beer, food, history, and local identity. Our guests learned how brewing traditions differed across regions and countries while enjoying the opportunity to experience those traditions firsthand. And because the journey was about Europe as much as beer, there was plenty of time to appreciate the architecture, landscapes, cuisine, and character of the places we visited.
That is one of the advantages of river cruising. The ship becomes a welcoming home between destinations, combining the convenience of unpacking once with the pleasure of waking up somewhere new. Days filled with exploration give way to excellent dining, onboard entertainment, and relaxed conversations with fellow travelers.
After the cruise, we continued to Como, Italy, for three nights. The beautiful lakeside setting provided a fitting finale, giving guests time to enjoy the town, explore the surrounding area, and savor the Italian art of slowing down before returning home.

European river cruising offers remarkable access to historic cities and cultural treasures, but nature occasionally has other plans. Unusually hot, dry weather left Rhine River water levels too low for our original itinerary, requiring AmaWaterways to adjust our route.
Our revised journey included Amsterdam, Antwerp, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, Basel, Lucerne, and Como. Although an itinerary change was unexpected, our guests embraced the opportunity to discover places they might not otherwise have visited. One guest even remarked that she felt the revised itinerary was better than the original.
